Murals & More FAQs
How much does a custom wall mural cost?
A. Custom-designed hand-painted mural pricing depends on a number of different factors. Including the size of the wall, the complexity of the design, the stability and texture of the surface being painted, and the location of the project. Most residential murals from Murals & More range from a few thousand dollars for smaller interior pieces to six figures or more for large-scale commercial or multi-story projects. Every project begins with a free consultation and a ballpark estimate, so there are no surprises. You can also simply give us a not-to-exceed budget, and we can design the piece accordingly.
How long does it take to paint a custom mural?
The timeline depends on the size and level of detail of the mural. Smaller residential murals are typically completed within 3–7 days, while mid-sized commercial murals generally take two to four weeks. Large multi-story exterior murals and highly detailed Trompe L’oeil pieces may take a month or longer. Canvas murals, which are hand-painted in our Franklin studio and installed on-site, allow us to work efficiently regardless of weather conditions. Michael will provide a firm timeline as part of your estimate.
Do you travel for mural projects?
In a word, Yes. While Murals & More is based in Franklin, Tennessee, master muralist Michael Cooper travels nationwide for both residential and commercial projects. We’ve completed murals throughout Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, New York, and across the United States, including projects in Denver, Colorado, Cheyenne, Wyoming, Palm Springs, California, Indianapolis, Indiana, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Lebanon, KY, just to name a few.
What surfaces can you paint a mural on?
We’ve hand-painted murals on nearly every surface imaginable, including interior drywall, exterior brick, concrete, stucco, split-faced stone, wood, corrugated metal panels, plaster, canvas (installed like wallpaper), aluminum panels, ceilings, and more. We select specialty paints and sealers based on the surface type, location, and whether the mural will be exposed to weather, UV rays, or moisture. Outdoor murals are painted with premium UV-resistant exterior paints designed for long-term durability. All of our murals are top-coated with a crystal clear solution to add durability and cut down on UV fading.
What is Trompe L'oeil and why is it a Murals & More specialty?
Trompe L’oeil, French for “to fool the eye,” is a uniquely designed and hand-painted technique that creates photorealistic illusions on walls, ceilings, and architectural surfaces utilizing perspective as a tool itself. A well-executed Trompe L’oeil mural can make a flat wall appear to be an open archway, a window overlooking a Tuscan landscape, or a hidden bookshelf. Maybe even an entire room that appears from nothing! Michael Cooper has more than 35 years of Trompe L’oeil experience and considers it one of the signature specialties of Murals & More, alongside Italian Venetian plaster, large scale graphics and decorative finishes.
How do you protect outdoor murals from weather and fading?
Exterior murals are painted using premium UV-resistant acrylic paints specifically formulated to resist fading, cracking, and weather damage. Once the mural is complete, we also apply a protective clear-coat sealer that adds an additional layer of UV protection and makes the surface easier to maintain. Many of our exterior murals, including projects on multi-story brick buildings, have remained vibrant for decades.
